GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION FOR SISTER OF ST JOSEPH

On 3rd January, many family and friends joined the Sisters of St Joseph to mark the Golden Jubilee of religious profession of Sister Colleen Power.   A joyful Jubilee Mass was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, New Town where Colleen made her first vows as a Sister of St Joseph on the 4th January, 1961.    Father Phillip McCormack was the main celebrant and homilist.  Concelebrants were Fathers Mark Freeman and Brian Nichols.  Colleen’s many years of service in education and parish ministry were acknowledged by the friends who gathered from all parts of the island where she had lived and worked.   The celebrations concluded with afternoon tea in the Mission and History Centre where the Jubilee cake baked and decorated by Sister Veronica Dillon was cut.

Later in the month, on Sunday, 30 January, the Circular Head community at St Peter Chanel church celebrated with Colleen both her 50th Anniversary of Profession and her 70th birthday.  Very appropriate hymns were sung at a beautiful Mass celebrated by Fr Phil McCormack.  Special prayers were said for her and she was wished another 50 years!  With flowers, cake and a lovely spread she enjoyed the company of the people with whom she feels so much at home.  Fr Phil spoke of Colleen’s service to the people of Tasmania and Kath Kennedy, chairperson of the Parish Pastoral Council, while congratulating, and thanking Colleen for her presence among them since the Sisters left Smithton, also recalled how much the work and lives of the Sisters of St Joseph had been appreciated during so many years in Circular Head.
