NEW FACES ON JOSEPHITE SCENE

Two new faces have recently become part of the Josephite scene in Tasmania.   Sister Jennifer Scally rsj has joined the ministry team at the Emmanuel Centre in Launceston and Jacob Miller is working at the Josephite Mission and History Centre at New Town.

Jenny is working in the area of Spiritual Direction at Emmanuel Launceston and Moonah, while  Jacob has begun his work to assist Josephite schools to develop ‘Junior Joeys’.   We warmly welcome both Jenny and Jacob.

Read something of their stories below…….

Hi I’m Jennifer Scally and I am a new comer to Tasmania. I arrived in Launceston on the 25 January this year. I am part of the Emmanuel Centre community and I am a Sister of St Joseph of the New South Wales Province. I am privileged to be working in the ministry of spiritual direction and spiritual development full time with the Emmanuel Centre. I am enjoying being a member of the Josephite community and the wider Emmanuel community as well as meeting new people through this ministry.

My own experience of God has been very strong and personal.  God has shown himself in my life very powerfully and this has encouraged me in a continuing relationship with God.

I was born and grew up in Sydney. I became a teacher and then entered the Sisters of St Joseph in 1984. After profession in 1987 I began to teach in country schools in New South Wales it was here that I came to see parents and colleagues who were searching for the meaning of God in their lives.

With this as background I then chose all my further study carefully as I saw myself being drawn to work more and more in the area of spirituality and adult faith formation. My theology studies and spiritual direction training  (in the 90’s)have encouraged and challenged me in my own relationship with God and have allowed me to walk with others in their spiritual journey through spiritual direction, reflection/prayer days and retreats.

Jacob Miller’s affiliation with the Sisters of St Joseph began at the age of nine, when he started Grade 3 at Immaculate Heart of Mary School; from there, he began to immerse himself in the culture of the Catholic Church. In his high school education at Sacred Heart College, New Town he was well known for his outreach initiatives and developed the two roles of: Student Leaders of Spirituality and Outreach. Jacob says that his passion for community service “stems from Mary MacKillop’s core value to ‘find happiness in making others happy’” and he has a keen interest in and thirst for, not only Mary’s story, but also for the story of Julian Tenison Woods and the Tasmanian Sisters of St Joseph.

In his position of Josephite Mission Assistant, Jacob looks forward to networking with Tasmanian Schools and Colleges who share in the charism of the Sisters. It is a hope of the Congregation that during his employment with us, he will be able to assist schools in establishing ‘Junior Joeys’ groups. Jacob is keen to do this.  His other goals include conducting tours of the Josephite Mission and History Centre and support of Schools in their education on ‘Josephite History’ and Mary MacKillop.
