Threads Of My Story

20 people from the NW coast of Tasmania, and from further afield, recently came together at MacKillop Hill, Forth for a  course entitled Threads of My Story – Autobiography of Transformative Learning.  Dr Alex Nelson, from the Broken Bay Institute in Sydney, led participants in critical and imaginative reflection on the experiences in their lives which have been transformative.

The four days of listening, reading, writing and reflection identified threads of various kinds that make up an individual’s life story.  Participants expressed the meaning and value of some of these threads by weaving them into a work of art in the form of a tapestry.  Interpretive statements communicated the experience of making the tapestry and some significant aspects of lifelong learning were reflected on developmentally and theologically.

Participants agreed that, although autobiographical learning calls for considerable emotional and spiritual energy, much can be gained from being attentive to the significant moments of transformative learning that run through our life and work.    Through theological reflection on our life stories, the face of God-with-us can certainly be revealed to us.
