Having had a presence in Catholic Schools in Tasmania for over a hundred years, one of our current contributions to Catholic education is through one Sister who teaches at Signadou, the Canberra campus of the Australian Catholic University. She lectures in pre-service Teacher Education and has responsibility for the orientation of first year students into university life.
In addition, she is engaged in a number of research projects including the National Project SiMERR (Science, Education and Technology in Rural and Regional Australia) and the mathematical development of children with Downs syndrome.
In this way, the traditional Josephite ministry of Catholic education, particularly to those in rural areas, is continued.
All the schools and colleges which were founded and originally staffed by the Sisters are now under the auspices of the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office and are staffed by dedicated lay teachers. The Sisters retain their ties with the former schools through membership of the Governing Councils of Sacred Heart, Guilford Young, St Patrick’s and St Brendan-Shaw Colleges as well as the Catholic Primary Schools’ Governing Council.
