The Josephite Mission and History Centre is located in what was formerly Sacred Heart Convent, at 67 Clare Street, New Town, next door to Sacred Heart College.
Our Mission is to preserve the Josephite story making it accessible to people of all ages. We seek to nurture Josephite spirituality wherever it connects with the hearts of people drawing them to a particular way of living the Gospel.
The Josephite Mission and History Centre's Mission Statement
The Sisters of St Joseph established the Josephite Mission and History Centre because we want our Tasmanian story not only to be heard but to be lived into the future. Our History rooms display that story as it has unfolded over one hundred years all over Tasmania. We tell the story of our origins in Penola, South Australia, where the young Mary MacKillop gave shape to the dream she shared with Fr Julian and began a system of Catholic education which was to reach the poor and disadvantaged children in rural areas of Australia.
In our history rooms we also tell the story of how that dream was lived out in Tasmania, in Catholic schools throughout the state. Today, the Sisters of St Joseph are no longer working on the staffs of these schools but our desire is that the charism, or founding gift as expressed by Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian, continues to be alive and given tangible expression in the culture of the school.
The Josephite Mission and History Centre offers support to all Tasmanian school communities but especially those which were founded on the Josephite charism and which are now seeking to reclaim that spirituality in response to the Archbishop’s Charter for Catholic Education.
The Origins programme is available to any group or school community on request.
Origins offers opportunities for formation in Josephite spirituality or any aspect of the history of Josephites, especially in Tasmania. The programme is available for staff and/or students. Presenters of the programme are willing to work in a school setting, or to welcome participants to the Centre for workshops, presentations, tours or seminars. The Sacred Heart Chapel is available for prayer and reflection for individuals and groups.
We believe Josephite spirituality is relevant to today’s society and we want to support others who may desire to live out their baptismal call by nurturing their spirituality according to this particular gift.
We also want the gift of Josephite spirituality to be accessible to all people – male or female, young or old, religious or lay, married or single.

be my witnesses throughout the world
(Acts 1:8)
In response to World Youth Day 08, the Sisters of St Joseph in Tasmania have established Josephite Justice and Action groups. This network brings together young adults from across the State to reflect on their lives and their world using the Cardijn method of See, Reflect and Act.
Inspired by the challenge of the Gospel message, JJA connects people who are passionate about making a difference in our world. Young adults have the opportunity to take concrete action for justice in the spirit of St Joseph and with the vision and conviction of Fr Julian and Blessed Mary MacKillop.

The Tasmanian Sisters of St Joseph through the Josephite Mission and History Centre respond to all requests for prayer. We have a prayer support team comprised of Sisters and their Associates who contact anyone who has made a request to respond and to offer assurance of our prayer through the intercession of St Joseph and Blessed Mary MacKillop.
